The Department of Commerce of Gangadharpur Mahavidyamandir started functioning from 1990-1991 with small number of students in B.Com Pass levels affiliated with Calcutta University. Further the department has received affiliation for teaching B.Com (Honours) in Accountancy of the C.U from year 1996-1997

Almost from the very beginning, the department has been utilizing the services of a number of part time faculty members with two substantive & permanent teachers. At present, It has 2 whole time teachers and 1 SACT faculty member.

Curriculum changes have occasionally been made at C.U. The most recent curriculum adjustment took place in August 2018. The C.U. curriculum has been upgraded to CBCS-based instruction. Currently, the B.Com. programme offered by C.U. consists of 26 papers of 100 marks examinations spread across six semesters. Each 100-point paper will be graded in three stages: internal assessment (10 points), attendance (10 points), and a written test (80 points, MCQ and non-MCQ types).

Calcutta University has adopted the recommendation of National Education Policy 2020 and thus Curriculum is changed from session 2023-2024, and it is named as CCF-2022 (Curriculum And Credit Framework) in which 4 years Honours / Honours with Research and 3 years Multidisciplinary programmes were offered. Certificate course will be provided to the students leaving after 1 year and Diploma course will be provided to the students leaving after 2 years but they need to do compusory internship before leaving or completing the course.

At present the department can boast of a good many number of its alumni who are now successfully placed as teachers, officers in Audit & Accounts Dept., in W.B. Police, in various prestigious organizations in India and abroad.
