Gangadharpur Mahavidyamandir began its journey as a constituent college under the University of Calcutta in the year 1981. Since its inception this college has been playing a pivotal role in the field of higher education in the district of Howrah. Currently, the department of History, among the eight existing departments, is one of the most sought after departments among the undergraduate students of the district of Howrah as well as other adjacent districts. This department started with Bachelor of Arts (General) course since 1981, and later on it incorporated the B.A. (Honours) course as well. Currently, the department offers Honours (or Major) and General (Minor) courses, having a good amount of student strengths. Along with it, the students of the History department opt for Political Science and Education as their interdisciplinary courses, that is to say, General/Minor subject combination for Honours/Major students as well General/Minor students. All the courses are being conducted in Semester format under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) or Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF), as per the norms of the University Grant Commission (UGC). So far as the faculty strength is concerned, the department has now two substantive Assistant Professors and one State Aided College Teacher (SACT), having specializations in Ancient Indian History, Islamic History and Modern Indian and European Histories. Thus, every aspect of Historical Studies is minutely covered in teaching-learning process. Faculty members are also well versed in research works – one having Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and one having Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree, both from the University of Calcutta. Other activities of the department includes short study tours (one day or two day span) to different places of historical significance including various museums, archives, repositories or institutions of historical significance and eminence, as well as conducting debates, organizing special lectures by resource persons attached to different higher academic institutions, quiz competitions, and seminar-workshop-outreach programmes to provide some hands-on experiences of studying histories. Apart from that, career counseling programme for demonstrating the job opportunities for the graduate students of History is informally conducted by the departmental faculty. Through various means of teaching-learning methods, the department has been ably maintaining a strong teacher-student coordination, which provides a constant source of sustenance for both the teachers and the students. The department is hopeful to extend the faculty strength in future so that the teacher-student ratio could be more compact than it is at present. The vision of the department is to attract more students to opt for historical studies in the undergraduate level. By now, the department is dedicated to provide an initial training in History in undergraduate level, so that career options like teaching, research, civil service, journalism, archivists, museum curator would seem lucrative to the students in future. Also, the department is hopeful to launch, in future, subjects like Public Administration, Rural Development, or International Relations as another set of interdisciplinary subjects in order to understand broadly the scope of History as branch of Social Science.
